Today I am tasting the 2008 Gatao Vinho Verde by Sociedade dos Vinhos Borges in Portugal. The “Cat” is made from Azal, Pedernã, Trajadura and Avesso varietals. I don’t know the percentages of each. This bottle has typical frizzante action and I found it for under $7. I’ve really been attracted to the Vinho Verde wines this year, so it will be interesting to see how this one fares.
Color
Has some good bubbles in the glass and a very pale yellow color.
Aroma
One the nose the acidity and lemon are present. It also has a bit of chemical to it similar to chlorine. There is also a hint of green apple.
Flavor
On the attack there is some papaya and lemon which persists through the mid-palate. It finishes with honeydew melon. This is a light, crisp offering with some sweetness and good acidity. It pairs well with fish, chicken and shellfish.
Rating
I like this wine. It is refreshing and tasty. It is not complex but delivers a very effective product. I rate it 90 points. And it is a steal for under $7.
