2005 Gumdale Cabernet Sauvignon

After the 2006 Gumdale Shiraz scored 90 points, I am eager to see what the 2005 Gumdale Cabernet Sauvignon from Wakely Vintners in Southeastern Australia can deliver. This wine is also a value at under $7. It has been a long time since I’ve found a high scoring Cabernet Sauvignon. Have you tried one lately? I’d love to try one, so please leave me a comment.

Color

A new feature to my wine reviews is a discussion of the color of the wine. Color can sometimes indicate quality and some wines have interesting colors which can be very appealing and enhance the enjoyment. Drinking wine from a clear glass is pretty standard as a way to easily view the color. This wine is a nice dark red with a little bit of brown.

Aroma

This isn’t the most aromatic wine, but I do detect some dark fruit. Definitely some blackberries in the mix and some oak. It also seems to be exhibiting a lot of woody aromas. I don’t know how long it was kept in barrels. Let me know if you find this (or if you are from Wakley Vintners, then put up a website with this).

Flavor

Good fruit on the attack. Not too sweet. More blackberries and black currant. There is a little bit of the tannins showing up on the mid-palate and then the finish has some pepper. I don’t detect the oak that much. Overall it is a fruity cab with a spicy finish. Should pair very well with red meats, chocolate, and blue cheese.

Rating

I think for the price, this is a decent wine. It is not terribly exciting. It isn’t silky smooth, but will pair well with food. I rate it 87 points.

What do you think of this wine?
