2006 Cousino-Macul Antiguas Reservas Cabernet Sauvignon

Today I am tasting the 2006 Antiguas Reservas Cabernet Sauvignon from Vina Cousino Macul in Chile. This “old vines” 100% Cabernet Sauvigon varietal is the signature wine of the vineyard and has been produced since 1927 from grapes from Bordeaux first planted in 1863. I am very excited to try it.

Color

The color of this wine is a deep dark red in the glass. Very promising.

Aroma

This wine is filling the room with its aromatic bounty. I let it breath for about 2 hours in the bottle before pouring. Blackberry, black currant, and black pepper are present. I also detect a small hint of asparagus on the nose.

Flavor

The attack is full of dark fruit such as blackberries, blueberries and black currant. The mid-palate is very sweet with black plum and it finishes with smooth sweet tannins and spices. This is a smooth wine with lots of fruit and not much oak. I like it a lot and believe it will pair well with red meat dishes and brie.

Rating

I recommend this wine if you can find it reasonably priced. I think a lot of people who like reds will enjoy it. I rate it 91 points.
