2008 Carta Vieja Cabernet Sauvignon

Today I am tasting the 2008 Carta Vieja Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile. The Vina Carta Vieja or “Old Letter” Vineyard is a very old vineyard in the history of Chile. Although I found this bottle for under $7, I know it is available for less.

Color

In the glass this wine is almost black. One of the darkest I have had in a while.

Aroma

On the nose it is full of dark fruit such as blackberries and black currant. There is also arugula and lettuce components showing.

Flavor

One of the things that hit me right away is that the mouth-feel of this wine is nice. It is heavy and almost chewy. On the attack it shows some black currant. The mid-palate has some black cherry. The finish is long and a little tannic. I suspect there is also some oak in it, but I am not sure how this wine was produced. Do you know if it is aged in oak barrels? Overall this is a big wine and will pair well with equally big dishes. Particularly grilled meats.

Rating

This is a good bottle of wine if not a bit plain. I rate it 87 points.
