2009 Anakena Sauvignon Blanc

Today I am tasting the 2009 Anakena Sauvignon Blanc from the Valle Central of Chile. This 100% Sauvignon Blanc based wine was purchased for under $8 and comes attractively packaged with a Double Headed Duck engraving. This wine is not aged in oak barrels. I’ve previously reviewed the 2007 Anakena Sauvignon Blanc, so it will be interesting to compare these vintages.

Color

In the glass it is surprisingly golden for a Sauvignon Blanc that has seen no oak. Very attractive.

Aroma

On the nose there are lime and grapefruit components. It comes across as very fresh and full of citric acid notes.

Flavor

The lemon and lime shows well on the attack with more of a lemon custard component on the mid-palate which is really nice. The finish is little hot but showing good acidity and grapefruit. The flavors linger for a decent amount of time. This wine is food friendly and will pair with salads, shrimp, and lighter fish.

Rating

This is a simple but decent Sauvignon Blanc. It doesn’t have any incredibly interesting flavors that make it notable on its own, but I recommend it be consumed with a meal. I rate it 86 points.

I found this vintage to be about as pleasing as the 2007, although the flavors and aromas do vary. Have you compared vintages over time? Did you see any changes in the flavors and aromas or do you think your palate might have also changed over time?

2008 Viña San Pedro Sauvignon Blanc Gato Negro

Today we are tasting the 2008 Gato Negro Sauvignon Blanc by San Pedro from Valle Central in Chile. This 100% Sauvignon Blanc wine was found for under $6 and comes with a screw cap. San Pedro is noted for their commitment to protecting the environment including using lighter glass in their bottles.

Color

In the glass this is a light yellow typical of Sauvignon Blanc.

Aroma

The most prominent note on the nose is lime. This isn’t showing a lot of aromatic intensity at this moment.

Flavor

The lime continues very strongly on the attack followed by custard apple on the mid-palate. There is also a hint of green apple and lettuce. There is some apricot on the finish. The acid is good and this crisp, citrusy wine will pair well with salad, seafood and chicken dishes.

Rating

We recommend this as a good value wine. It is very food friendly and we rate it 90 points.

2009 Cono Sur Sauvignon Blanc

Today I am tasting the 2009 Cono Sur Sauvignon Blanc from the Valle Central in Chile. This 100% Sauvignon Blanc comes in attractive packaging with a screw-cap and is shipped via a Carbon Neutral delivery method. I love the environmental approach by Cono Sur and found this bottle for under $9. I was very impressed by the 2008 Cono Sur Sauvignon Blanc, so it will be interesting to compare.

Color

Very light golden color in the glass. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Aroma

Grapefruit and passion fruit on the nose. There is also some good lemon components.

Flavor

A hint of green apple on the attack along with strong passion fruit. The mid-palate shows some great lemon. The finish is long with predominantly grapefruit and limes. This wine is super crisp with great acidity. If you like the citrus flavors then this wine is delicious. It will pair well with seafood, chicken, salads and many other light dishes. Due to the strong lemon, I’d love to try it with key lime pie. In additon, it will work well as an apéritif.

Rating

I like this wine and recommend you give it a try. I rate it 92 points.

2008 The Crossings Sauvignon Blanc

Today I am tasting the 2008 The Crossings Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. It comes in an attractive package with a screw cap. I was able to find it for under $12.

Color

The color is the typical light yellow/gold of most Sauvignon Blanc’s.

Aroma

The nose is a nice combination of lemon and honeydew melon. Very light and refreshing.

Flavor

The attack is sweet and tropical. It transitions from the lime to lemon on the mid-palate and finishes with grapefruit and minerals. This wine has great acidity and will pair well with lots of food because of that. The sweetness of the fruit is well-balanced with the acid and I really like it. It is hard to remember that it even has alcohol.

Rating

I highly recommend this as a good apertif and for pairing with food. I rate it 92 points.

Have you tried a good Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc lately for under $10? Did you get any grassy aromas or flavors?

2008 Brancott Sauvignon Blanc

Going back to one of the first Sauvignon Blanc wines that I really got into, I am tasting the newest vintage, the 2008 Sauvignon Blanc from Brancott Vineyards in the Marlborough region of New Zealand. Brancott is one of the New Zealand wineries that is dedicated to sustainability and using organic approaches. Brancott goes a step further in their programs to restore native plants, wetlands and even releasing falcons back into the area. This wine retails for around $11 and comes with a handy screw cap.

Color

Very light yellow in color. Typical for a Sauvignon Blanc.

Aroma

The aroma is bursting with fruit. Lots of green apple and grapefruit with a hint of pear. You also can almost smell the acidity of it.

Flavor

The attack is interesting. It reminds me of sour apple candy. The mid-palate continues to show sweetness and then the vibrant citrus takes over from there to the end. Lime is really strong. Again, this is not a subtle wine. The crisp citrus and fruit flavors make it a great wine on its own. Great acidity on this wine will make it pair well with a lot of food. Seafood and salads will be great with it. For those that can afford it, this would make a great wine with which to cook.

Rating

If you like Sauvignon Blancs that are fruity and acidic, I think you will really like this wine. It is a great representative of the Marlborough region. I think it is an outstanding wine. I recommend it and rate it 94 points.

2008 Santa Rita 120 Sauvignon Blanc

Today I am tasting another Chilean wine, the 2008 Santa Rita 120 Sauvignon Blanc. Santa Rita’s 120 wines are named for the 120 fighters who took shelter in the Santa Rita cellars during Chile’s fight for independence. This wine is a blend of 98% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Semillon varietals. It is smartly packaged with a screw cap and available for under $10.

Aroma

This wine has a great nose with wonderful citrus and melon aromas. I pick up pear, green apple and honey dew. It smells fresh and clean.

Flavor

The attack is a bit sweeter than I expected from a Sauvignon Blanc, but it is balanced by good acid. I taste pear and apple with long lasting grapefruit on the back end. The grapefruit is really fun. The mid-palate is actually kind of creamy. This wine will go well with seafood and creamy pasta dishes.

Rating

I like this wine and recommend you try it. It is especially interesting to taste the grapefruit. I rate it at 88 points.

2008 Los Vascos Sauvignon Blanc

Today I am tasting the 2008 Los Vascos Sauvignon Blanc from Domains Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) in Chile. I found this bottle for under $8. I wasn’t able to locate the percentage of the varietal or the oak treatment for this wine. Anyone know? I’d love for all brands to provide this on the label.

Color

In the glass, this wine is more like a mix of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc in color. It has a nice golden tint.

Aroma

On the nose there is quince, oak and lime. I also get some grapefruit components.

Flavor

The attack has some apple and sweet flavors. There is also a bit of gooseberry present. It transitions to more of a citrus flavor on the mid-palate with some lime and grapefruit on the finish. The mid-palate has a over-ripe cantaloupe component which is really interesting. It shows some creamy flavor probably most likely due to an oak treatment. The acidity is good on the finish and it is very long. It pairs really well with fish, chicken and salad.

Rating

I like this wine. It is smooth and easy on the palate. It has different characteristics than a big fruity Sauvignon Blanc such as those from New Zealand. I rate it 88 points and a good value.

2007 Anakena Sauvignon Blanc

Today I am tasting another varietal from Vina Anakena. The 2007 Anakena Sauvignon Blanc is from the Central Valley in Chile and is available for under $10. The bottle is adorned with a Double headed duck engraving. This white wine is not aged in oak. In my experience, Sauvignon Blanc produced in Chile is a great wine for food and is not as fruity as the Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. It reminds me of similar offerings from South Africa and France.

Aroma

This wine has a pleasing aroma of fruit. In particular, I smell pear and apple. It smells refreshing and has some citrus components. Overall it has a very good nose.

Flavor

There is good acidity in this Anakena varietal which makes it crisp and a great match for food. It is a very mild flavored wine with some sour apple flavor. I would pair it with seafood, salads, and a mild cheese. Generally this is a wine that has a little flavor initially, but then quickly fades away to nothing. It doesn’t have any bad flavor, so it could work well for non-wine drinkers who are just starting to taste wine with food. Has anyone tried it (well chilled) as an introductory wine for friends?

Rating

I recommend this wine for when you want a wine that really doesn’t interfere with the flavor of food. As an apertif it is a little too plain for my palate. I rate the 2007 Anakena Sauvignon Blanc at 86 points.

Have you tried it with or without food?

2008 Cono Sur Sauvignon Blanc

I previously posted about the environment friendly Cono Sur Vineyard and Winery that produces this wine. I’ve always enjoyed the Sauvignon Blancs from New Zealand’s Marlborough region. Some people find them to be too much fruit, but for my palate they are fantastic. However, they have started to increase in price and I have been trying to find something similar from Chile. At less than $10, the 2008 Cono Sur Sauvignon Blanc is a value. Kudos to Cono Sur for using a colorful screw cap again.

Aroma

Unlike many of the Sauvignon Blancs from Chile that I have previously tried, this wine has a vibrant nose. I immediately was blown away by the green apple. I also detect a lot of citrus in it such as lime. Overall it has a pleasing aroma and comes across as being zesty and fresh.

Flavor

The fruit is immediately present on the palate. Citrus and sour apple flavors burst out of it. The wine has a mid palate that is quite sweet and pleasing with a crisp finish. The lime flavor lasts for a long, long time. The lime component on the backend reminds me of a certain gin with Rangpur limes. If you like sour citrus, then this is the wine for you! This wine pairs well with seafood, salads, and anything light and citrusy. It will work well as an apéritif.

Rating

I recommend it and rate it at 90 points.

2008 Pucela Viura Sauvignon Blanc

Today I am tasting the 2008 Pucela Viura Sauvignon Blanc White Wine by Hijos de Alberto Gutierrez. This wine is made of 50% Viura (Macabeo) and 50% Sauvignon Blanc in the Castilla y Leon region of Spain. Macabeo is often used in sparkling Cava wines. I acquired this bottle for under $8.

Color

In the glass this wine is similar to most Sauvignon Blancs. It is perhaps a bit more oily.

Aroma

On the nose I detect some heavy lemon components. There also is some green apple and pear. It is not particularly aromatic.

Flavor

On the attack there is quite a bit of sweetness. The Viura is present and the citrus and acidity of the Sauvignon Blanc is muted. Flavors range from pear to lemon and it finishes with some grapefruit which I expect is coming from the Sauvignon Blanc. This wine should pair well with light food dishes. I find it satisfactory on its own, but prefer the higher acid and stronger citrus notes of a pure Sauvignon Blanc.

Rating

I recommend trying this wine, especially if the sharpness of Sauvignon Blancs is too much for your palate. I rate it 86 points.
