2008 Bodegas Borsao Campo de Borja Red Wine

Today I am tasting the 2008 Borsao Red Wine by Bodegas Borsao from Campo de Borja, Spain. This wine is made from 75% Garnacha (Grenache) and 25% Tempranillo grapes. It was purchased for under $7 and will be interesting to compare with the 2007 Bodegas Borsao Red Wine.

Color

In the glass this wine is a dark purple in color with garnet around the edges.

Aroma

The fruit jumps right out the glass on the nose of this wine. It has intense black currant and raspberry aromas. There is also a hint of mint and juniper which is refreshing. It is a young wine and smells like a fresh one.

Flavor

On the attack there is a sweet (too much maybe) strawberry component. Then, in the mid-palate it becomes a medium dry wine with great fruit. Strawberry and cherry give way to some good spice on the finish. I like the fruit throughout and believe that is will be very food friendly. It is medium bodied and a bit hot on the finish due to the 14% alcohol. It will pair well with beef tenderloin and smoky meats.

Rating

For the price, I think this wine is compelling. It is a bit too sweet and would be better if it was more of a dry wine. I rate it 87 points.

I think this vintage is slightly better than the previous year. It continues the trend of improving on the finish, but there is less oak and better fruit. Have you tried it? What did you like or dislike about it?

2007 El Sierro Macabeo Chardonnay

Today I am tasting the 2007 El Sierro Macabeo Chardonnay by Vinos de la Vina from the Valencia region of Spain. This blend of 95% Macabeo (Viura) and 5% Chardonnay varietals was acquired for under $7. Macabeo is often used to make Cava, so it will be interesting to try it in a non-sparkling version.

Color

In the glass it is a nice light golden yellow. There is a very slight oily appearance.

Aroma

Citrus notes are showing well on the nose. There is grapefruit and lemon. It also has some key lime pie notes.

Flavor

The attack has some of the lemon from the nose, but it is joined by creamy flavors which do remind me of a Cava. There is great acidity and a heavier mouthfeel to it. It really strikes me as a great food wine for buttery seafood dishes. There is a butterscotch component showing up also. This is definitely a different white wine than the typical Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc varietal offerings which are so common today.

Rating

I recommend trying his wine. It has some similarity to Viognier and Chardonnay. I rate it 89 points.

2008 Bodegas Juan Gil Wrongo Dongo Monastrell

Today we are tasting the 2008 Wrongo Dongo Monastrell by Bodegas Juan Gil from the Jumilla region of Spain. This bottle which has one of the more attractive labels out there, was acquired for under $8. It is likely this is made of 100% Monastrell (Mourvedre) though the winemaker’s site doesn’t indicate it nor does the label. Anyone know?

Color

In the glass this wine is ruby red.

Aroma

On the nose, there is some red currant and black currant. There is also a clear dirt note. It is earthy and some cedar is showing as well. Very nice aroma overall. After a while the earthiness tends to blow off leaving fruit and oak components.

Flavor

There is black cherry on the attack and mid-palate. Some nice dry tannins on the finish along with lingering sour cherries and a hint of dark chocolate. This will pair well with pasta and chili and chocolate.

Rating

This is a decent wine. It is simple but very approachable. It is a plus that it is not overly fruity and sweet. We rate it 88 points.

Have you had a good Mourvedre lately?

2008 Nostrada Tempranillo

Today we are tasting the 2008 Nostrada Tempranillo by Artiga Fustel from the Tarragona region of Spain. This wine made of 100% Tempranillo varietal was purchased for under $7.

Color

In the glass this wine is a nice dark red with a little brown at the edges.

Aroma

It is very aromatic in the glass and is full of dark fruit. We detect blackberry and black currant. There is also some cedar.

Flavor

The blackberry and black currant continue on the attack. There is a lot of ripe fruit in this wine. It is definitely quite new world in style. Black cherry is present on the mid-palate and it finishes with very dry, chalky tannins. There is a little black pepper at the end as well. Although it isn’t full bodied, this wine pairs very nicely with steak seasoned with pepper. The fruits are toned down by the meat. We found this wine better with food than on its own.

Rating

For the price this is a good match for big flavorful meals. We rate it 87 points.

2007 Toscar Monastrell

Today I am tasting the 2007 Toscar Monastrell by Salvador Proveda from Alicante, Spain. This wine is primarily, if not 100%, Mourvèdre (Monastrell) varietal and was under $9. For some interesting background on Mourvedre, check out Mourvedre: the next big red? by Dr. Vino.

Day One

Just popped the cork.

Color

Nice dark purple in the glass. No problem with color on this one.

Aroma

Wow! This wine explodes out of the bottle and even more after you pour it in the glass. Dark fruit including black currant and black cherry on the nose. There is also a stinky nose that starts to blow off after a little breathing time. It is along the lines of the “wet dog” aroma. I am also get a hint of clove on the nose. Really fascinating aromatics.

Flavor

Some blackberry on the attack with dark cherry on the mid-palate. The finish is quite long with black currant and fig. There is also a lot of sour cherry lingering. This wine has an interesting mouth feel with tannins that thoroughly coat your palate with a chalkiness to them. This is a wine with lots of flavors, but not a fruit bomb. Nor is it high in sugar. Thus it will pair well with with a lot of food. Just don’t have it with anything too light or too spicy.

Rating

I’m enjoying the originality of this wine quite a bit and recommend you try it as a way to expand your palate. I rate it 90 points.

Day Two

It has now been opened for 24 hours. Just put the cork back in it the previous day.

Aroma

This wine is still showing well on the nose. Dark fruits dominate with blackberry and black currant being prominent. It is very jammy and has some oak too. Really nice.

Flavor

On the attack there is black plum and fig. The mid-palate has a lot of black cherries and it finishes with some black pepper and good dry tannins. Surprisingly the chalk flavors that I got yesterday are now gone. This is a good wine to pair with smoked meats and rich cheese.

Rating

I like this wine. It isn’t as intense as yesterday. It has softened around the edges and has more fruit character to it. But it is still not too sweet. I rate it 89 points.

Summary

This is a good bargain Monastrell and I recommend you look for it. Have you had a Monastrell lately? If so, what flavors and aromas did you discover that surprised you?

Segura Viudas Cava Brut Reserva

Today we are tasting the Non Vintage Segura Viudas Cava Brut Reserva from the Alt Penedès region of Spain. It is a sparkling wine known as Cava. This blend of 50% Macabeo (Viura), 15% Xarel-lo, and 35% Parellada was available for less than $9.

Color

This wine is a very light golden in the glass with good bubbles.

Aroma

On the nose we get a lot of white grape juice. There is also some subtle notes of oak and lime. One of the most intriguing aromas is a chemically note that is similar to the inside of a balloon.

Flavor

The lime continues on the attack and the mid-palate. This wine has a butter-like creamy mid-palate and grapefruit on the finish. As a Brut it is right in the middle of the spectrum for sparkling wine. It is not too sweet and not too dry. The acidity is above average and it makes for a nice food pairing wine. It pairs well with lighter dishes and desserts.

Rating

Given the low price this is a good value. We recommend you give it a try just to see if you are reminded of a popped balloon on the nose. We rate it 85 points.

2008 Hermanos del Villar Verdejo Rueda Ipsum

Today we are tasting the 2008 Ipsum by Hermanos del Villar from Rueda, Spain. This wine wins the award for labeling. There is even a number (1-800-Ole-Vino ext 137) to find out more. This blend of 60% Verdejo and 40% Viura(Macabeo) grapes was found for under $8.

Color

Very light in color which would be typical for a crisp white wine in the glass.

Aroma

Strong passion fruit on the nose, along with floral notes and lime. Very nice aroma.

Flavor

Good lemon on the attack with a creamy smooth mid-palate and finish. There is grapefruit on the finish and the passion fruit is still present in moderation. The smoothness (probably from the Verdejo) has a honey aspect to it which is nice. This pairs great with chicken, fish and salads.

Rating

I like this wine and recommend you find it. I rate this 89 points.

Castillo D Clavijo Rioja

Today I am tasting the non-vintage Castillo D Clavijo Rioja by Criadores De Rioja from Spain. I acquired this 100% Tempranillo varietal for under $9.

Color

The color in the glass is a pretty ruby red. It is thin.

Aroma

This wine has an interesting herbal aspect to the nose. There is some blueberry to go with oregano and thyme. I also get some cedar.

Flavor

The attack has sweet dark fruits such as blackberry and plum. The mid-palate is a little hollow; although, there is some black cherry flavors. The wine finishes up quickly with some smokey aspects. Not a great flavor profile overall. This is a medium to light-bodied wine. It could pair well with cheddar cheese.

Rating

I am not too fond of this wine. Perhaps the Crianzas are better. I rate this wine 83 points.

2008 Martin Codax Albarino

Today we are tasting the 2008 Martin Codax Albarino by Rias Baixas in Spain. This bottle made of 100% Albarino grape varietal (Alvarinho in Portugal) was found for under $10. Interestingly, Albarino sold in Australia has been recently found to be Savagnin Blanc.

Color

In the glass this wine is a light golden color between a Sauvignon Blanc and a Chardonnay.

Aroma

On the nose there is strong green apple. Other than that there is a little pear.

Flavor

It is showing a very sweet attack with the apple carrying on from the nose. There is some lime in the mid-palate and grapefruit dominates on the finish. This wine has good acidity. It is crisp and clean, and will pair well with a lot of light food. If you like Sauvignon Blanc, then this is similar in many aspects.

Rating

We like this wine and encourage you to try it. We rate it 88 points

2005 Bodegas Montecillo Rioja Crianza

Today I am tasting the widely available 2005 Bodegas Montecillo Rioja Crianzaicon (affiliate link) from Rioja, Spain. This Tempranillo based wine was available for under $10 and comes with a real cork (watch out!). Being a crianza it is aged in oak barrels for more than one year and then kept another year in the bottle before release. Let’s see how it shows.

Color

In the glass it is a medium ruby red.

Aroma

Very old world on the nose which is nice. Black pepper, leather, cherry and a bit of oak. Quite complex.

Flavor

On the attack there is cherry which carries onto the mid-palate. The tannins show up fast and this gets quite dry too. Lots of oak on the finish along with a little vanilla. The finish is quite long. I also think this will age well due to the tannic structure. It will pair well with paella and even blackened fish.

Rating

For my palate this is showing too much oak on the finish. I’d prefer more of the fruit and earthiness of Rioja to show through. I rate it 85 points.
